cuppingfloor1 How Humidity Wreaks Havoc on Your Hardwood Floors

Wood is a hygroscopic material, meaning that it absorbs moisture from the air around it. The amount of moisture in wood (known as “moisture content” or MC) is often expressed in terms of percentages. Green wood (meaning freshly cut) may have an MC ranging anywhere from 30% to 250%. The MC of a freshly cut piece of wood varies depending on the species of wood, time of year, and other factors.

After being cut and dried in a kiln, the MC usually drops down to somewhere between 6% and 8%. However, the moisture content of dried lumber may vary greatly depending on the humidity in the space where it’s stored, the species of wood, and the cut.

Carpet trends of 2014 are pushing in the direction of personal creativity, and away from neutral practicality.

Carpeting has come a long way in the last few decades. In the 1990′s, the general consumer attitude was that carpet had to be neutral colored and it had to be Berber. Berber, an easy to clean, easy to maintain, and easy to match carpet was practical for so many reasons that many homeowners couldn’t imagine making any other choice. Gone were the days of 1980′s sea-foam and mauve colored carpets or 1970′s shag.

Berber carpets of the 1990′s have left a lasting impression that remains with us today. Berber is still the carpet of choice for public places like office buildings and waiting rooms. Yet, domestic carpet trends are moving away from the standards of the 90′s. These trends include unique and interesting patterns, bright color choices, and soft textured piles. Read more…
