Environmentally Safe Floor Cleaning Options

No matter how well decorated and neat your house is, a dingy, dirty floor will give the appearance of an unkempt home. You can purchase a number of specialty products for cleaning your floors, but many of them are unhealthy for your family and the environment. Choosing natural cleaning products is a safe alternative to consider and here are our favorite suggestions:

Some of the most common commercial cleaning products advertised as carpet stain removers are also some of the worst in terms of chemicals. However, according to a National Geographic Green Living article, there are some safe products you may already have in your kitchen that work just as well.

  • Add one part vinegar to one part water and you have your own liquid stain remover or solution for your steam-cleaning machine. Instead of leaving behind a vinegar smell, the odor will dissipate after the solution dries.
  • Use baking soda as a replacement for carpet powders you would typically buy from your local grocery store. Just apply it on areas of your carpet that smell less than perfect and allow it to sit. Vacuum it up shortly after and the smell will go away with the baking soda!

 Wood Floors

If you have wood floors at home and are trying to use only natural cleaning solutions, there is a great article in The Daily Green that goes into detail on how to best attend to your wood floors in this way. For example:

  • Stay away from using excessive amounts of water or any oil based cleaning products on your wood or it could ruin it.
  • A damp (not wet) rag with a solution of vinegar and water can gently scrub away stains and leave your floor with a clean, shiny appearance. Similar to carpet, your vinegar solution will be one-quarter cup of white vinegar mixed into a spray bottle with 30 ounces of warm water. Use this solution to damply mop your floors. Keep blotting up the solution with your rag and don’t forget to replace them once they’ve become spoiled.

Laminates Floors

Similar to cleaning products for carpet and hardwood floors, a common environmentally safe cleaning solution for laminate is vinegar mixed with hot water. Use a mixture of one part vinegar and one part water with a mop or on a damp cloth for spot cleaning.

Commercial Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products

While you may need to do individual research on how they work with your particular flooring, there are in fact some commercial cleaning products that are environmentally friendly that may help out your cleaning dilemma. Consider some of the following brands but don’t forget to check the ingredients to make sure they are up to your own standards.

  • Simple Green Carpet Cleaner – This multi-purpose cleaner is biodegradable, non-hazardous, non-flammable and VOC compliant. Simple Green is good on carpet, upholstery and even laminate floors. This is a simple, eco friendly and cost effective solution.
  • Weiman Eco-Friendly Wood Floor Cleaner – This cleaning solution cleans and protects your floors naturally. Weiman’s cleaning solution is also biodegradable and will safely remove dirt, dust, grime, and any other marks. This cleaner is good for most surfaces including finished hardwood, linoleum, vinyl and more.
  • Bissell Professional Cleaning Formula – This is the ideal option for steam cleaning machines and it has EPA approval.

Trying any of these natural cleaning suggestions will make you feel infinitely better about not bringing harsh chemicals around your family – and as a bonus, you’re doing your part to help protect the environment!
