Carpet Cleaning: How to Keep Your Carpet Looking Fresh

Carpet cleaning is an essential part of maintaining a beautiful, clean home. There are many different ways to keep your carpet clean, and it’s important to use all of these methods on a regular basis. Carpets that are not thoroughly and adequately cleaned can quickly become stained or dingy.

Vacuum

How often: 1 – 2 times per week

Regular vacuuming is the most basic of carpet cleaning tasks, and also one of the most important. Establish a regular vacuuming schedule, with the most frequent vacuuming taking place in those areas of the home that get the most foot traffic.

Vacuum lesser-used rooms–such as the guest bedroom and formal entertaining areas–once per week. Vacuum the hallways, entrance ways, dining room, stair cases, master and child bedrooms and living room twice per week.

Spot Treat

How often: 1 time per week, or as needed

Regular spot treatment keeps your carpets looking fresher for longer, and reduces the need for more thorough carpet cleaning. To keep your carpet free of spots, inspect high-traffic areas on a weekly basis, and spot treat as needed. Keep white rags on hand for spot treatment. If you live with young children, look for spots more frequently than once per week.

Deodorize

How often: 1 time per month, or as needed

Carpets absorb odors, and over time, carpets can start to developing odors of their own. This is entirely preventable with a very common household product: baking soda.

One time per month, sprinkle baking soda over your carpet and leave it to sit overnight. The baking soda will absorb odors and leave your carpet smelling fresh. The following morning, vacuum the baking soda.

If covering your entire home with baking soda sounds difficult and inconvenient, do one room at a time over the course of a week. The baking soda method also works to reduce odors from localized problems like spills. Use your spot treatment product to clean the spot, then sprinkle baking soda over the area and let it sit overnight. Vacuum the baking soda the following morning.

DIY Carpet Cleaning Vs. Professional Carpet Cleaning

Many homeowners prefer DIY carpet cleaning to professional carpet cleaning because of its affordability. Rental carpet cleaning devices are available at many home improvement centers. These units can be operated by a single person with little trouble, and use many of the same processes to clean carpet as professional-grade devices.

However, in many cases, professional carpet cleaning will yield superior results. Professional carpet cleaners are well-trained and more experienced at carpet cleaning than typical homeowners. Professionals are less likely to make errors during the cleaning process, and often know tips and tricks to keep the carpet looking fresh and beautiful.

Whether you’re cleaning your carpet professionally, or with a rental unit, implementing a regular cleaning schedule is important. Clean all your carpets at least once per year. High traffic areas will need more regular cleanings, up to 4 times per year.

More Tips

Vacuuming, spot treating, and steam cleaning aren’t the only ways to keep carpet looking its best. Here are a few more tips to help homeowners maintain the beautiful carpet:

  • Install carpet in practical, neutral colors that hide dirt.
  • Scotch guard areas that are especially prone to stains.
  • Rake your carpet before vacuuming to loosen dirt and give your carpet a fresher look.
